Read the Label

Thursday night was a highly embarrassing event for me. We had faculty and student skits and I had filmed the skits and put them together in iMovie and made them look awesome. So one would think that all I would have to do is push the play button and the night would run seemlessly. Nope. Kirstin had a few beers in the afternoon, and unbeknownst to her she should not drink when taking a certain medication. The medication amplifies the effects of alcohol. Seriously. The DVD player on my mac broke when the skits started, so if I was in my right mind all I would have to do is play them directly from iMovie. But this turned out to be impossible in my state of mind. So to all the faculty, friends, and classmates that had to see me like this...I'm Sorry!!!! Thanks to all who took over the controls.

I think this event ranks #1 in my most embarrassing life moments. #2 occurred on my 22nd birthday at a Tommy Chong comedy show where I was volunteered to go up on stage for half the show and had nightmares about it for weeks. I think all other embarrassing moments took place in high school and I refuse to think about them.

MUSE!

I've had good luck with concerts lately. Muse rocked my booty last night, I even had to get into the mosh pit for the first time in 5 years. When did mosh pits become full of teenage boys???? I felt old. But! For those that say Muse is a Radiohead rip off, check them out live cause they definitely have their own killer stage presence.

Leaving the MidWest

Gus always asks me what I'm going to miss about the midwest when we move out to Seattle. And I say..
1. Fireflies
2. Lightning Storms
3. Arkansas
4. Swimming when it's 100+ degrees out
5. Friends and family :(

Roll Over Beethoven

For the last three years I have been trying to see Chuck Berry play at the Duck Room, and finally last night, one month before exiting the midwest I made it to the show. Phenominal! The guy rocked the joint with a blue sequin shirt, sailors' cap, and the classic duck walk. His daughter plays a mean harmonica, and his son matches licks on the guitar. I've seen quite a few old rock'n'rollers and bluesman play and I had doubts about whether Chuck would still be worth the ticket price, but within the first 10 seconds I could tell he hadn't lost anything. He actually made it really funny when he forgot lyrics...like having to ask his son how Roll Over Beethoven starts, and mumbling the second verse of You Never Can Tell. So go see Chuck Berry! The man is a legend.

Gotta Love It

Got my hair cut for the first time in 8 months today. I had forgotten how much I love my hairdresser. He plays David Bowie continuously and dances around just like Bowie does in the movie Labyrinth. If you're a St. Louis resident and want to look fabulous and have an entertaining hour at the same time Shan is there for you.

One down

Finished my first marathon with minimal wear and tear today. Started out feeling a little too good and had a 4 hour pace up until mile 15 and then reality set in and I had to drop back and finish at 4:17. Saint Louis actually has hills (who knew?) and the course designers decided they liked them. But the weather was beautiful at nearly 80 degrees and except for a 15 mph head wind during the final 6 miles, the day couldn't have been more perfect. Gus should have some action shots posted soon.....congrats to all the other half and full marathon finishers! Woot woot.

Dana's not a wimp??!

New research is showing there is something to the rumor that redheads experience higher levels of certain types of pain:

Liem EB, Joiner TV, Tsueda K, Sessler DI. Increased sensitivity to thermal pain and reduced subcutaneous lidocaine efficacy in redheads. Anesthesiology. 2005;102(3):509-14.

Conclusion: Red hair is the phenotype for mutations of the melanocortin-1 receptor. Results indicate that redheads are more sensitive to thermal pain and are resistant to the analgesic effects of subcutaneous lidocaine. Mutations of the melanocortin-1 receptor, or a consequence thereof, thus modulate pain sensitivity.

I don't think Dana can blame her fear of flying on red hair....yet.
